Fexofenadine Side Effects

Fexofenadine is an antihistamine that is used for treatment in the following situations:

  • the body’s reactions to allergens such as dust and pollen
  • insect bites
  • skin rashes
  • runny nose
  • watery eyes

Just like any other medicine, side effects maybe caused due to the usage of fexofenadine.  However, not everybody who takes this antihistamine will experience these side effects. In fact, the drug is well tolerated by many people who take it. When side effects do occur in patients, these are often so minor that they do not require any medical treatment or can be easily treated by a health care professional.

Some Basic Precautions to Keep in Mind Before Taking Fexofenadine

Fexofenadine should be taken orally with a full glass of water. It can be taken either on a full or an empty stomach, but it should not be taken more often than directed by the physician. While children as young as six years old may be prescribed with this medication, it is always advisable to first consult a pediatrician before actually administering the drug to children. Before taking fexofenadine, it is also equally important to let the physician know if the patient suffers from any heart problems, kidney disease, epilepsy or blood disorder called porphyria. Also, the patient should inform the physician if she is pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breast-feeding a child.  The patient should give complete details regarding both prescription drugs, non-prescription drugs and supplements being taken by him / her. If the patient has experienced any adverse reactions to fexofenadine or is allergic to any other drugs, he / she should give the doctor all the relevant details before beginning treatment.

Some Side Effects That Could be Caused Due to Fexafenadine

Together with their therapeutic effects, almost all medicines have their share of unwanted side effects that usually go away as the body gets used to the new medicine. While the following side effects caused by fexofenadine are exceedingly rare, the patient should immediately seek the help of a physician if he / she experiences any of these symptoms:

  • drowsiness  blurry vision: this is a potentially dangerous condition. The patient should be very alert, especially before driving a vehicle or operating any machinery. The patient should avoid consuming alcohol while taking fexofenadine medication because alcoholic substances will only increase drowsiness.
  • headache
  • dry mouth: When a patient encounters this problem, he / she can try sucking on a piece of ice or sugar-free candy. But if the mouth becomes too dry and begins to bother the patient, it is best to speak to a physician.
  • skin sensitivity to sunlight: It is best use a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of more than 15 while venturing out in bright sunlight.
